These terms apply to the Bible Synapse website (“the site”). By using the site you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.

1. What the site is

Bible Synapse is a free, non-commercial website for studying the Bible. It shows cross-references between passages, Bible texts, commentaries, devotions, people, places, maps, timelines, archaeological finds and answers to questions that are often raised about the Bible. It has no accounts, no advertising and no paid features.

2. Who owns the content

Bible Synapse does not own the content shown on the site. The Bible texts and translations, commentaries, devotional books, dictionaries, cross-reference data, Hebrew and Greek data, people and place data, maps, illustrations, photographs, fonts and software all belong to their respective owners, or are in the public domain. Each one is named, with its licence, on the Credits & ownership page, and photographs are also credited where they are shown.

The site gathers this material in one place for study. It claims no ownership of any of it, and nothing on the site should be read as a claim that the material is the site’s own.

Names and trademarks (for example “World English Bible”) belong to their owners and are used only to identify their works. Their use does not mean that any owner is connected with, sponsors or endorses the site.

3. Using the material

• For your own study, teaching and worship you may read, print and share what you find on the site.
• Material from other owners may be reused only as its owner’s licence allows. Many works on the site are in the public domain; others are under Creative Commons or similar licences that require you to credit the owner and, in some cases, to share your changes under the same licence. The Credits & ownership page lists each licence. It is your responsibility to follow it.
• Wording written for the site. Some short texts on the site were written for it: the explanations of connections, the archaeology summaries, the answers to hard questions, the reading and thread plans and the “Reflect & apply” notes. They are built from the sources they cite, and the facts and ideas in them belong to those sources. Only the arrangement and wording are shared, under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 licence. If you reuse them, please credit the original sources as well as Bible Synapse.

4. What you may not do

• Use the site in a way that breaks the law or the rights of the owners named on the Credits page.
• Present material from the site as your own, or remove the credits and licence notices that come with it.
• Suggest that Bible Synapse, or any owner named on the Credits page, endorses you, your product or your views.
• Try to damage, overload or interfere with the site, or with the services it draws on.

5. No warranty

The site is offered free of charge, “as is” and “as available”. Care has been taken to check the material against its sources, but it may contain errors, gaps or out-of-date information, and it may change or stop working at any time. No promise is made that the site is accurate, complete, uninterrupted or fit for any particular purpose. See the Disclaimer.

6. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, Bible Synapse is not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of the site, from your reliance on anything shown on it, or from the loss of notes or other data kept in your own browser. Nothing in these terms limits any liability that cannot lawfully be limited.

7. Links and other services

The site links to, and loads some material from, websites and services run by others (see the Privacy Policy). Bible Synapse does not control them and is not responsible for their content, availability or practices. Their own terms apply when you use them.

8. Copyright concerns

If you own material shown on the site and believe it is used wrongly, or not credited as you wish, please see Copyright & takedown. Material will be corrected or removed promptly when a valid concern is raised.

9. Changes

These terms may be updated. The date at the top shows when they last changed. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the updated terms.
