Jacob asks to be buried with his fathers in the cave of Machpelah, where Abraham, Isaac and Leah were buried.
And he charged them, and said unto them, I am to be gathered unto my people: bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite, In the cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field of Ephron the Hittite for a possession of a buryingplace. There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife; there they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife; and there I buried Leah.
His sons bury him “in the cave of the field of Machpelah”, near Mamre.
For his sons carried him into the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought with the field for a possession of a buryingplace of Ephron the Hittite, before Mamre.
Stephen: Jacob died in Egypt, “he, and our fathers”, who “were carried over into Sychem” and laid in a tomb there.
So Jacob went down into Egypt, and died, he, and our fathers, And were carried over into Sychem, and laid in the sepulchre that Abraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Emmor the father of Sychem.
Joseph’s bones, brought up from Egypt, are buried at Shechem in the ground Jacob bought from the sons of Hamor.
And the bones of Joseph, which the children of Israel brought up out of Egypt, buried they in Shechem, in a parcel of ground which Jacob bought of the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for an hundred pieces of silver: and it became the inheritance of the children of Joseph.
The objection
Genesis says that Jacob’s sons carried his body from Egypt and buried him in the cave of Machpelah, near Hebron (Genesis 50:13). But Stephen says that Jacob went down into Egypt and died, “he, and our fathers”, and that they “were carried over into Sychem” and laid in a tomb there (Acts 7:15–16). Was Jacob buried at Machpelah or at Shechem?
The answer
Stephen does not say that Jacob was buried at Shechem. Verse 15 says that Jacob died in Egypt, and so did “our fathers”, his twelve sons. Verse 16 says that ‘they’ were carried to Shechem, and Stephen’s hearers knew who was meant. Jacob’s burial at Machpelah was one of the best-known scenes in Genesis (49:29–32; 50:13), and the burial of Joseph’s bones at Shechem, when Israel entered the land, was just as famous (Joshua 24:32; compare Genesis 50:25). The BSB brings this out: “Their bones were carried back to Shechem”. John Gill and Albert Barnes both read the verse this way: Jacob was laid at Machpelah, the patriarchs at Shechem.
Stephen was speaking to men who knew Genesis well, and he gathers the deaths and burials of two generations into one sentence. His point was the one he had made in verse 5: in the land God had promised them, the fathers owned nothing but graves, and those they had to buy. The same compression accounts for Stephen’s words about who bought the tomb, which is a separate question on this site.

The Syriac reading
The old Syriac version puts the verb in the singular, ‘he was carried’, as though Stephen spoke of Jacob alone. Gill notes this but sets it aside: the Greek is plural, and Jacob was buried at Machpelah, so the verse must speak of the fathers.
Two burials in one sentence
Some read the whole of verses 15–16 as covering both burials at once: Jacob carried to the tomb Abraham bought at Machpelah, his sons to the ground at Shechem bought from the sons of Hamor. John Gill thought this the best reading, and on it too Stephen places Jacob at Machpelah.
Still open
Scripture says only that Joseph was buried at Shechem. Whether his brothers were laid there too is not recorded. Josephus says they were buried at Hebron, while other Jewish writers placed them at Shechem, and Stephen’s words follow the second view. Barnes suggests that the Samaritans’ hold on Shechem may have led some Jews to prefer the Hebron tradition.

whereas he is not spoken of at all, only the fathers, the twelve patriarchs; for Jacob, though he was carried out of Egypt, he was not buried in Sichem, but in the cave of Machpelah, Genesis 50:13.John Gill, Exposition of the Bible, on Acts 7:16 (1746–1763)
