The passages

Matthew 26:34

Jesus to Peter: “before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.”

Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.

Mark 14:30

Jesus to Peter: “before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice.”

And Jesus saith unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this day, even in this night, before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice.

Mark 14:66–72

After Peter’s first denial “the cock crew”; after the third, “the second time the cock crew”, and Peter remembered.

And as Peter was beneath in the palace, there cometh one of the maids of the high priest: And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked upon him, and said, And thou also wast with Jesus of Nazareth. But he denied, saying, I know not, neither understand I what thou sayest. And he went out into the porch; and the cock crew. And a maid saw him again, and began to say to them that stood by, This is one of them. And he denied it again. And a little after, they that stood by said again to Peter, Surely thou art one of them: for thou art a Galilean, and thy speech agreeth thereto. But he began to curse and to swear, saying, I know not this man of whom ye speak. …

Luke 22:60–61

As Peter made his third denial, “immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew”.

And Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew. And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.

The objection

In Matthew, Luke and John, Jesus says Peter will deny him three times before the cock crows, and one crowing is recorded, after the third denial. In Mark, Jesus says “before the cock crow twice”, and the cock crows after the first denial and again after the third. Critics say the prophecy and its fulfilment are told in two incompatible ways.

The answer

Mark gives the fuller detail; the other Gospels give the essential point. Jesus warned Peter that before the night’s cock-crowing was over he would have denied him three times. Mark, whose Gospel early tradition links with Peter’s own preaching, records the precise form, “before the cock crow twice” (Mark 14:30), and notes both crowings (14:68, 72). Matthew, Luke and John give the warning in its shorter form and mention only the crowing that mattered: the one that came as Peter finished his third denial and brought Jesus’ words back to him (Matthew 26:74–75; Luke 22:60–61).

The shorter form is not wrong, because ‘cock-crow’ was a recognised time of night: Mark names it as one of the night’s four watches, “at the cockcrowing” (Mark 13:35; Greek alektorophōnia), between midnight and about three in the morning. A cock may crow once and then crow in earnest later, and Gill notes that the second crowing was ‘properly the cock crowing’. To say ‘before the cock crows you will deny me three times’ is true if the third denial comes before that main crowing, as it did. Mark’s ‘twice’ adds precision rather than a different prediction, and no Gospel says that the cock crowed only once.

Other answers Christians give

Two warnings

Luke and John place Jesus’ warning in the upper room (Luke 22:34; John 13:38), while Matthew and Mark place it on the way to the Mount of Olives (Matthew 26:30–34; Mark 14:26–30). Some harmonists think Jesus warned Peter more than once that night, in slightly different words. The answer above does not depend on this.

From the classic commentators

before the cock crow twice; for there was a first and second cock crowing, the one at midnight, and the other near break of day, and which last is properly the cock crowingJohn Gill, Exposition of the Bible, on Mark 14 (1746–1763)
