Explained connections
- Do this in remembrance of me
Luke's account is closest to Paul's, including the command 'do this in remembrance of me' — Luke was Paul's travelling companion.
- Numbered with the transgressors
On his last night Jesus himself quotes this line and says it must be fulfilled in him. Hours later he is arrested like a criminal and crucified between two thieves.
- The new covenant in my blood
Jeremiah foresaw a new covenant with forgiveness and God's law on the heart. At the Last Supper Jesus calls the cup the new covenant in his blood — the only time he uses the phrase.
- Weeping on the Mount of Olives
Betrayed by his trusted adviser Ahithophel, King David climbs the Mount of Olives weeping. On the night Judas betrays him, Jesus goes to the same mount to pray in anguish — a parallel noted since early times.
