Explained connections
- Precious to believers, a stumbling stone to others
Peter weaves Psalm 118:22 together with Isaiah 28:16 and 8:14 into a 'stone' collage. The same stone is precious to those who believe and a cause of stumbling to those who reject it.
- By his stripes we are healed
Isaiah describes the servant wounded for our transgressions, his punishment bringing us peace and healing. Peter weaves these words into his teaching on the cross, telling believers that Christ bore their sins in his body on the tree.
- Sheep gone astray
Isaiah confesses that we all like sheep have gone astray and the LORD laid our iniquity on the servant. Peter finishes his passage the same way: you were straying sheep but have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
- No deceit in his mouth
The servant suffers though he did no violence and spoke no deceit. Peter quotes it word for word to present Jesus as the sinless example for believers who suffer unjustly.
- Living stones on the cornerstone
Peter quotes Isaiah's cornerstone promise to describe believers as living stones built into a spiritual house on Christ. The image turns the temple into a people.
- Once not a people, now God's people
Peter uses Hosea's reversal for his scattered readers, many of them Gentiles: once not a people, now the people of God; once without mercy, now shown mercy.
- A royal priesthood, a holy nation
At Sinai God called Israel a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. Peter gives those titles to the church, a people for God's own possession to proclaim his praises.
