Explained connections
- The root and offspring of David
Isaiah foresees a shoot growing from Jesse's stump, a new king from a cut-down dynasty. Near the end of the Bible Jesus calls himself both the root and the offspring of David — David's source and his descendant.
- The tree of life
The tree of life stands in Eden's centre; after the fall the way to it is barred. In the Bible's last chapter it stands by the river in the city, bearing fruit every month, its leaves for the healing of the nations — Eden restored and expanded.
- The way to the tree reopened
Cherubim with a flaming sword guard the way to the tree of life after Adam and Eve are expelled. Revelation blesses those who wash their robes, giving them the right to the tree and entry through the city's gates.
- No more curse
God says the ground is cursed because of Adam. In the new Jerusalem 'there shall be no more curse' — the sentence of Genesis 3 is finally lifted.
- The river from Eden
A river flows out of Eden to water the garden. Revelation's river of the water of life flows from God's throne — paradise's river returns at the centre of the city.
- Water flowing from the temple
Ezekiel sees water flowing from the restored temple, growing into a river that brings life wherever it goes. John's vision draws directly on it, with God and the Lamb as the source.
- Leaves for healing
Ezekiel's river is lined with trees bearing fruit monthly, their leaves for healing. Revelation repeats the picture and extends healing to the nations.
- The saints reign
Daniel's vision gives the kingdom to the people of the saints of the Most High. Revelation ends with God's servants reigning for ever and ever.
- Alpha and Omega
Revelation ends with Jesus calling himself Alpha and Omega, first and last, beginning and end — the same claim God makes in Isaiah, now applied to Christ.
- Living waters from Jerusalem
Zechariah sees living waters flowing from Jerusalem east and west, summer and winter. Revelation's river from the throne completes this cluster of prophecies.
- Come to the waters, without price
Isaiah calls everyone who thirsts to come and drink, without money. The Bible's last invitation repeats it: whoever is thirsty, come; take the water of life freely.
