Explained connections
- Hated without a cause
The psalmist's enemies hate him for no reason. Jesus says the world's hatred of him fulfils the words written 'in their law' — Psalms counted as Scripture alongside the Torah — showing the rejection was anticipated.
- Zeal for your house
The psalmist is consumed by passion for God's house and bears the insults aimed at God. When Jesus drives traders from the temple, his disciples remember this verse; the line also foreshadows that his zeal will cost him his life.
- Gall and vinegar
The psalmist complains that enemies gave him gall for food and vinegar to drink. Matthew describes Jesus offered wine mixed with gall, which he refused, matching the psalm's language closely.
- Vinegar on hyssop
After Jesus says 'I thirst', soldiers lift a sponge of sour wine to his mouth on hyssop. John frames it as Scripture being fulfilled, and the hyssop quietly recalls the Passover, where hyssop was used to apply the lamb's blood.
- Let his habitation be desolate
Psalm 69 calls for the enemies' dwelling to become desolate. Peter applies it to Judas, whose field became deserted, and pairs it with Psalm 109:8 to justify choosing a replacement apostle.
- Reproaches fell on me
The second half of Psalm 69:9 says insults aimed at God fell on the psalmist. Paul applies it to Christ, who did not please himself, as a model for bearing with weaker believers.
