Explained connections
- Beginning at Jerusalem
Luke ends his Gospel with repentance and forgiveness preached to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. He opens Acts with the same commission — Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and the ends of the earth — which becomes the outline of Acts.
- The ascension, told twice
Luke ends volume one and begins volume two with Jesus' ascension, binding the two books. Acts adds the cloud and the angels' promise of his return.
- Let his habitation be desolate
Psalm 69 calls for the enemies' dwelling to become desolate. Peter applies it to Judas, whose field became deserted, and pairs it with Psalm 109:8 to justify choosing a replacement apostle.
- Let another take his office
Psalm 109, a prayer against a treacherous accuser, asks that another take his position. Peter combines it with Psalm 69:25: one verse explains Judas' fate, the other the need to fill his place among the Twelve, leading to the choice of Matthias.
- Taken up into heaven
Elijah is taken up into heaven while his successor Elisha watches and then receives his spirit. Jesus is taken up before his disciples, who then receive his Spirit at Pentecost.
