Explained connections
- The Last Supper
Matthew and Mark share almost identical words over the bread at the Last Supper: take, eat, this is my body.
- Paul hands on the Lord's Supper
Writing perhaps fifteen years before the earliest Gospel, Paul gives the oldest written account of the Last Supper, which he says he received from the Lord and passed on.
- Anointing at Bethany
A woman pours costly ointment on Jesus at Bethany. John names her Mary, sister of Lazarus, and says she anointed his feet; Matthew and Mark say his head. Jesus says it prepares him for burial.
- Struck and spat upon
The third Servant Song has the servant giving his back to smiters and not hiding his face from shame and spitting. At his trial before the Sanhedrin Jesus is spat on and beaten exactly so, and he does not resist.
- Silent before his accusers
The servant does not open his mouth, like a sheep before its shearers. Before the high priest's false witnesses Jesus holds his peace, a silence the Gospels repeatedly note, including before Pilate and Herod.
- The Son of Man on the clouds
Daniel sees 'one like a son of man' coming with the clouds to receive everlasting dominion from the Ancient of Days. Under oath before the high priest, Jesus claims this vision (with Psalm 110:1) for himself — the high priest calls it blasphemy.
- Thirty pieces of silver
In Zechariah's sign-act the shepherd's wages are weighed out as thirty pieces of silver — the price of a slave in Exodus 21:32, an insult to God's shepherd. The chief priests pay Judas exactly that sum to betray Jesus.
- Strike the shepherd, the sheep scatter
Zechariah has God command the sword against his shepherd so the flock scatters. On the way to Gethsemane Jesus quotes it to predict the disciples' desertion — fulfilled that same night.
- The poor always with you
Deuteronomy says there will always be poor in the land, therefore open your hand to them. Jesus' words at Bethany echo this verse, a reminder that his statement assumes ongoing generosity, not indifference.
- Bread and wine
Melchizedek brings out bread and wine to Abraham. From the early church onward many Christians have seen a foreshadowing of the Lord's Supper in this priest-king's gift; the New Testament does not make this link explicitly.
- Sold for silver
Joseph's brothers sell him to traders for twenty pieces of silver. Jesus is betrayed for thirty. Both are rejected by their own, handed to outsiders, and later become the means of rescuing those who betrayed them.
- The blood of the covenant
Moses sprinkles blood on the people saying 'Behold the blood of the covenant'. At the Last Supper Jesus takes the cup and says 'This is my blood of the covenant' — consciously echoing Sinai to found a new covenant.
