Explained connections
- "A body hast thou prepared me"
The psalmist says God did not desire sacrifices but opened his ears to obey. Hebrews quotes the Greek version, which reads 'a body you prepared for me', and puts the words in Christ's mouth at his coming: his obedient self-offering replaces animal sacrifice.
- Do not shrink back
Hebrews quotes Habakkuk to encourage persecuted believers to endure: the coming one will not delay, and the righteous live by faith rather than shrinking back. The same verse serves three New Testament books with three emphases.
- The Lord will judge his people
Hebrews quotes the same line as a sober warning: deliberately rejecting Christ's sacrifice leaves only judgement. The same text gives comfort in Romans and warning in Hebrews.
- Laws written on hearts
Hebrews returns to Jeremiah to show that, in the new covenant, God writes his law on hearts and remembers sins no more — so no further sacrifice for sin is needed.
- Sins remembered no more
Jeremiah's new covenant ends with God forgetting sins. Hebrews concludes from this that where sins are forgiven, no further offering is needed.
- The new and living way through the veil
The tabernacle's woven curtain barred the way into God's presence. Hebrews says believers now enter through a new and living way opened through the veil — that is, Christ's flesh.
- The bronze laver
Priests washed at the bronze laver before serving. Hebrews invites believers to draw near with bodies washed with pure water — baptismal language using the priestly pattern.
