Explained connections
- Immanuel — God with us
Isaiah gives King Ahaz a sign: a young woman ('almah') will bear a son called Immanuel. Matthew quotes the Greek version, which uses 'parthenos' (virgin), and sees its fullest meaning in Jesus' virgin birth; many readers note an initial sign in Ahaz's day as well. Matthew ends his Gospel with the same idea: 'I am with you always'.
- Conceive and bear a son
Gabriel's words to Mary — you will conceive and bear a son — closely mirror the phrasing of Isaiah 7:14 in Greek. Luke does not cite the verse, but the parallel to Matthew's explicit quotation is widely noted.
