Explained connections
- The baptism of Jesus
Matthew and Mark both describe heaven opening and the Spirit descending like a dove. Mark's word is vivid: the heavens were 'torn open' — the same verb he uses for the temple veil at Jesus' death.
- The voice at the baptism
At Jesus' baptism the heavenly voice calls him 'my beloved Son'. Most interpreters hear Psalm 2:7 (the royal Son) blended with Isaiah 42:1 (the Servant in whom God delights), so the voice presents Jesus as both messianic King and suffering Servant.
- The Spirit rests upon him
The coming branch of Jesse will have the Spirit of the LORD resting on him. At Jesus' baptism the Spirit descends and comes upon him, marking him as the Spirit-anointed king Isaiah described.
- A voice in the wilderness
Isaiah hears a voice calling to prepare a way for the LORD in the wilderness, the start of Israel's homecoming from exile. All four Gospels identify John the Baptist as that voice; since the way is prepared for the LORD himself, the one who follows John is implicitly God coming to his people.
- Burning the chaff
Malachi pictures the coming day burning like an oven, leaving the arrogant as stubble. John the Baptist warns of one who will burn the chaff with unquenchable fire — the Old Testament's last prophet and the New Testament's first share the warning.
- Through the Jordan
Israel enters the promised land by crossing the Jordan behind the ark. Jesus begins his mission at the same river; many readers see his baptism as leading a new entry into God's promises.
- The Spirit over the waters
At creation the Spirit hovers over the waters. At Jesus' baptism the Spirit descends over the water of the Jordan like a dove — many readers see a new-creation moment.
