Explained connections
- The blood of the covenant
Moses sprinkled sacrificial blood on the people to ratify the Sinai covenant. Hebrews quotes his words to show covenants are sealed with blood — preparing for Christ's own blood.
- Entering the Holy Place with blood
On the Day of Atonement the high priest took goat's blood behind the veil. Hebrews says Christ entered the heavenly holy place once for all with his own blood, securing eternal redemption.
- Bearing the sins of many
The scapegoat carried Israel's iniquities into the wilderness. Hebrews says Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many — combining the sacrifice and the sin-bearing goat in one person.
- The life is in the blood
Leviticus explains that blood makes atonement because life is in it. Hebrews summarises: without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness — the principle behind the cross.
- The ashes of a red heifer
The ashes of an unblemished red heifer purified those defiled by contact with death. Hebrews argues that if such rites cleansed the body, Christ's blood will much more cleanse the conscience.
