Explained connections
- According to the pattern
God told Moses to build the tabernacle after the pattern shown on the mountain. Hebrews reads the earthly sanctuary as a copy and shadow of the heavenly one where Christ ministers.
- God tabernacles among us
God asks Israel to build a sanctuary so he can dwell among them. John says the Word became flesh and 'dwelt' — literally pitched his tent — among us, and we saw his glory, as Israel saw it fill the tabernacle.
- The mercy seat
The mercy seat was the gold lid of the ark where atoning blood was sprinkled. Paul calls Christ a propitiation, using the same Greek word (hilasterion) the Septuagint uses for the mercy seat: Christ is the place where sin is atoned.
- The lampstands
The tabernacle's golden lampstand gave light in God's dwelling. In Revelation the risen Christ walks among seven golden lampstands, which are the seven churches — the church now carries the light.
- Two angels at either end
God met Israel between two golden cherubim at either end of the mercy seat. Mary sees two angels in white sitting at the head and foot of where Jesus' body had lain — many readers see a deliberate picture of the new mercy seat.
