Explained connections
- None righteous, no, not one
Psalm 14 describes the LORD looking down and finding no one who does good. Paul opens a long chain of Old Testament quotations with it to prove that Jews and Gentiles alike are under sin.
- Their throat an open grave
David describes the deceitful speech of his enemies. Paul strings it into his catalogue of human sinfulness, focusing on how sin corrupts the mouth and tongue.
- Poison of asps under their lips
David compares slanderers to snakes with venom under their lips. Paul places it right after Psalm 5:9 in the same verse, building a picture of speech as an instrument of sin.
- No fear of God before their eyes
Psalm 36 diagnoses the wicked: no fear of God before their eyes. Paul ends his chain of quotations with this verse, naming the root of all the sins he has listed.
- That you may be justified in your words
In his confession after sinning with Bathsheba, David says God is right to judge him. Paul cites it to affirm God's faithfulness even when people are unfaithful.
- The mercy seat
The mercy seat was the gold lid of the ark where atoning blood was sprinkled. Paul calls Christ a propitiation, using the same Greek word (hilasterion) the Septuagint uses for the mercy seat: Christ is the place where sin is atoned.
