Explained connections
- I will never leave you
Moses assures Israel and Joshua that God will not forsake them as they enter Canaan. Hebrews uses the promise to free believers from the love of money.
- The Lord is my helper
Psalm 118 says that with the LORD on my side I will not fear what man can do. Hebrews places it right after God's promise never to leave, as the believer's confident response.
- Outside the camp
The bodies of the sin-offering animals were burned outside the camp. Hebrews notes Jesus suffered outside the city gate and calls believers to go to him outside the camp, bearing his reproach.
- The great shepherd of the sheep
Isaiah pictures God tending his flock like a shepherd, carrying lambs close. Hebrews' closing blessing names Jesus the great shepherd of the sheep, raised from the dead through the blood of the covenant.
