Explained connections
- "Ye are gods"
Psalm 82 calls Israel's judges 'gods' because they received God's word. Facing a stoning for blasphemy, Jesus argues from the lesser to the greater: if they could be called gods, the one the Father sanctified can surely call himself God's Son.
- The LORD is my shepherd
David calls the LORD his shepherd, who leads, feeds and protects. Jesus says 'I am the good shepherd' who lays down his life for the sheep — taking God's own shepherd role.
- One shepherd, one flock
After condemning Israel's selfish leaders, God promises one shepherd, 'my servant David', over a united flock. Jesus speaks of other sheep he must bring so there will be one flock and one shepherd.
