Explained connections
- "Christ cometh out of Bethlehem"
Some in Jerusalem object that the Christ should come from David's town of Bethlehem, not Galilee. John lets the irony stand: readers know Jesus was indeed born in Bethlehem, though the crowd assumes otherwise.
- Living water at the Feast of Tabernacles
The Feast of Tabernacles remembered God's provision in the wilderness and, by Jesus' day, included water-pouring ceremonies. On its great last day Jesus invites anyone thirsty to come to him for living water, meaning the Spirit.
- Rivers of living water
Water gushes from the rock struck by Moses. Jesus promises rivers of living water flowing from within believers, meaning the Spirit — Paul's 'the rock was Christ' and John's living water draw on the same wilderness memory.
