Explained connections
- Bethlehem, city of David
God sends Samuel to Jesse of Bethlehem to anoint a new king. Joseph goes to Bethlehem, 'the city of David', because he is of David's house — the town of the first anointing hosts the Messiah's birth.
- Unto us a child is born
Isaiah announces a royal child with titles like Mighty God and Prince of Peace. The angel's announcement to the shepherds — unto you is born a Saviour, Christ the Lord — echoes the 'unto us' birth announcement and its peace.
- Simeon's song
Holding the infant Jesus in the temple, the aged Simeon calls him a light for revelation to the Gentiles and the glory of Israel. His words weave Isaiah's Servant Songs into the earliest recognition of Jesus in Luke.
- Every firstborn male is holy to the Lord
God claimed Israel's firstborn after the Passover. Mary and Joseph present Jesus at the temple in obedience to this law.
- A pair of turtledoves
Leviticus allowed poor families to offer two birds instead of a lamb after childbirth. Luke's mention of this offering quietly reveals Jesus' family was poor.
