Explained connections
- Obed, father of Jesse, father of David
The book of Ruth ends with a genealogy leading to David. Luke's genealogy of Jesus runs through the same names, linking a small family story to the royal line.
- Two genealogies of Jesus
Matthew traces Jesus from Abraham through David and Solomon; Luke traces him back through David's son Nathan to Adam. Common explanations are that one follows Joseph's legal line and the other Mary's, or that they reflect legal and natural descent.
- The Spirit in bodily form
Luke adds that the Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove, while Jesus was praying — Luke often notes Jesus praying at key moments.
- Prepare the way of the Lord
Luke quotes Isaiah 40 at greater length than the other Gospels, carrying it through to the promise that all flesh will see God's salvation. That fits Luke's emphasis on salvation reaching every nation.
- All flesh shall see the salvation of God
Isaiah says the glory of the LORD will be revealed and all flesh will see it together. Luke, alone among the Gospels, extends the quotation to this line, signalling from the outset that the gospel is for every people.
