Explained connections
- Exalted and lifted up
The final Servant Song opens with the servant being exalted, lifted up and very high — before describing his suffering. Paul's hymn in Philippians follows the same shape: humiliation to death on a cross, then God highly exalting him.
- Those not told shall see
Isaiah says nations and kings will see and understand what they were never told about the servant. Paul quotes the verse to explain his strategy of preaching where Christ had not yet been named.
- Beautiful feet of those who bring good news
Isaiah celebrates the messenger running to Zion with news of peace and God's reign. Paul uses it to stress the need for preachers: people cannot believe without hearing.
- Come out and be separate
Isaiah tells exiles leaving Babylon to touch nothing unclean. Paul applies the call to believers' holiness.
- God's name blasphemed among the Gentiles
Isaiah says God's name is reviled because of Israel's exile. Paul applies it to hypocrisy: those who teach the law but break it cause outsiders to dishonour God.
