Explained connections
- The heavens and the earth — made new
The Bible begins with God creating the heavens and the earth and ends with a new heaven and a new earth. These bookends frame the whole canon as one story: creation, ruin, and restoration — the longest arc on the map.
- New heavens and a new earth
Isaiah first announces that God will create new heavens and a new earth where former troubles are forgotten. Revelation sees that promise fulfilled; much of Revelation 21–22 is woven from Isaiah 60–66.
- God dwelling with his people
Ezekiel promises God's tabernacle will be with his people and he will be their God. Revelation's loud voice announces it: the dwelling of God is with humanity — the covenant formula's final fulfilment.
- God wipes away every tear
Isaiah promises God will swallow up death and wipe tears from all faces. Revelation quotes the promise for the new creation: no more death, mourning, crying or pain.
- Behold, I make all things new
From the throne God declares he makes all things new, the cosmic scale of Isaiah's 'new thing'.
- No need of sun or moon
Isaiah says the LORD will be Zion's everlasting light. The new Jerusalem has no need of sun or moon, because God's glory lights it and the Lamb is its lamp.
- Gates never shut
Isaiah's restored Zion keeps its gates open day and night so the wealth of nations can come in. Revelation's city gates are never shut, for there is no night.
- The city on a high mountain
Ezekiel is taken to a very high mountain and shown a city-like temple. John is carried to a great high mountain and shown the holy Jerusalem — Revelation's final vision follows Ezekiel's final vision.
- The LORD is there
Ezekiel's book ends by naming the city 'The LORD is there'. Revelation's city has no temple because the Lord God and the Lamb are its temple — God's presence fills everything.
