Explained connections
- All things under his feet
The psalm gives humankind dominion over creation. Paul reads it of the risen Christ, the last Adam, under whose feet God places every enemy including death — with the one exception of God the Father himself.
- Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die
Isaiah condemns Jerusalem's partying when it should repent. Paul quotes the careless slogan to show what life looks like if there is no resurrection.
- Death is swallowed up in victory
Isaiah foresees God swallowing up death for ever at his feast for all peoples. Paul quotes it as the outcome of the resurrection, when the perishable puts on the imperishable.
- O death, where is your sting?
In Hosea the questions to death and the grave may be a summons for judgement. Paul turns them into a taunt of victory: through Christ death has lost its sting, which is sin.
- I know that my Redeemer lives
In deep suffering Job declares his redeemer lives and that he will see God in his flesh. Paul describes the moment that hope becomes reality: at the last trumpet the dead will be raised imperishable.
- The first Adam and the last Adam
Genesis says God breathed into Adam and he became a living soul. Paul quotes it and sets Christ beside Adam as the 'last Adam' who became a life-giving spirit: Adam heads the old humanity, Christ the new, risen one.
- In Adam all die, in Christ all made alive
After the fall Adam is told he will return to dust. Paul's resurrection chapter answers that sentence: as death came through one man, resurrection comes through another man, Christ.
- Firstfruits
Israel offered the first sheaf of the harvest to God as a pledge of the full harvest. Paul calls the risen Christ the firstfruits of those who have died: his resurrection guarantees theirs. He rose on the day after the Sabbath, when this offering was made.
