Explained connections
- Why seek the living among the dead?
Luke's angels ask why the women seek the living among the dead and remind them of Jesus' own prediction.
- Beginning at Jerusalem
Luke ends his Gospel with repentance and forgiveness preached to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. He opens Acts with the same commission — Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and the ends of the earth — which becomes the outline of Acts.
- The ascension, told twice
Luke ends volume one and begins volume two with Jesus' ascension, binding the two books. Acts adds the cloud and the angels' promise of his return.
- The Anointed One cut off
Daniel's seventy-weeks vision speaks of an anointed one being 'cut off' before the city and sanctuary are destroyed. Christian readers since the early church have linked it to the Messiah's death; Jesus' words on the Emmaus road — the Christ had to suffer — summarise that conviction. The interpretation of Daniel 9 is much debated.
