Explained connections
- Jesus' last words
Luke records 'Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit'; John records 'It is finished'. Each Gospel preserves different words from the cross, together giving seven sayings.
- "Into thy hands I commit my spirit"
Psalm 31 is a trusting prayer of someone surrounded by enemies. Luke records Jesus' last words as this line, adding 'Father' — dying not in despair but in confident surrender. Stephen echoes it in Acts 7:59.
- He made intercession for the transgressors
The servant's final act in Isaiah 53 is praying for the transgressors. On the cross Jesus prays 'Father, forgive them' for his executioners — the song's last line enacted.
- Mountains, fall on us
Hosea foresees people begging the mountains to cover them in judgement. On the way to the cross Jesus quotes it to the women of Jerusalem, warning of coming disaster.
