Explained connections
- A great light in Galilee
Isaiah promises light to the northern territories of Zebulun and Naphtali, the first lands lost to Assyria. Matthew notes Jesus began his ministry in exactly that region, by the Sea of Galilee — the darkest place first to see the dawn.
- Not by bread alone
Moses reminds Israel that God let them hunger in the wilderness and fed them manna to teach that people live by every word from God's mouth. Tempted after forty days of fasting, Jesus answers Satan with this verse: where Israel failed its forty-year test, the true Son trusts the Father.
- Do not test the Lord your God
Deuteronomy recalls Massah, where Israel demanded water to see whether God was among them. When Satan urges Jesus to leap from the temple and force God to rescue him, Jesus refuses with this command — trust does not stage tests.
- Worship God only
Moses commands Israel to fear and serve the LORD alone. Offered all the kingdoms of the world for one act of worship, Jesus dismisses Satan with this text. All three of his answers in the wilderness come from Deuteronomy 6–8.
- The devil quotes Scripture
Psalm 91 promises angelic protection to those who trust God. Satan quotes it to tempt Jesus to jump from the temple, leaving out the context of humble trust — a reminder that Scripture can be misused, and Jesus answers with Scripture rightly applied.
- Forty days of fasting
Moses fasts forty days and nights on Sinai while receiving the covenant. Jesus fasts forty days and nights before his ministry, then goes up a mountain to teach — Matthew's portrait of a new Moses.
