Explained connections
- Do not test the Lord your God
Deuteronomy recalls Massah, where Israel demanded water to see whether God was among them. When Satan urges Jesus to leap from the temple and force God to rescue him, Jesus refuses with this command — trust does not stage tests.
- Worship God only
Moses commands Israel to fear and serve the LORD alone. Offered all the kingdoms of the world for one act of worship, Jesus dismisses Satan with this text. All three of his answers in the wilderness come from Deuteronomy 6–8.
- The Shema
'Hear, O Israel: the LORD our God is one LORD' is Israel's daily confession of faith. Asked for the first commandment, Jesus begins with the Shema itself, grounding love for God in who God is.
- Love God with all your heart
Deuteronomy commands love for God with all heart, soul and strength. Jesus names it the first and greatest commandment, then pairs it with Leviticus 19:18 and says all the Law and Prophets hang on these two.
- Teach your children
Moses tells parents to talk of God's words at home and on the road. Paul tells fathers to bring children up in the training and instruction of the Lord.
- Even the demons believe God is one
James grants that believing in one God, the Shema's truth, is good — but demons believe it too and tremble. Belief that never acts is not saving faith.
