Explained connections
- Love your neighbour as yourself
Tucked among Leviticus' holiness laws is the command to love one's neighbour as oneself. Jesus lifts it beside the Shema as the second great commandment; the pairing of these two texts is one of his signature teachings.
- Love sums up the law
Paul lists commandments against adultery, murder, theft and coveting, then says they are all summed up in loving one's neighbour. Love does no harm, so it fulfils the law.
- The whole law in one word
Writing to Christians tempted to return to law-keeping, Paul says the whole law is fulfilled in this single command. Freedom in Christ is not licence but freedom to serve one another in love.
- The royal law
James calls Leviticus 19:18 the 'royal law' and uses it to condemn favouritism towards the rich in church gatherings. Showing partiality breaks the law of love — and James notes the same chapter of Leviticus also forbids partiality (19:15).
- Holy as God is holy
Leviticus calls Israel to be holy because God is holy. Jesus echoes the pattern: be perfect, or complete, as your heavenly Father is perfect, after teaching love for enemies.
- Welcome the stranger
Israel must love the foreigner as themselves, since they were foreigners in Egypt. In Jesus' judgement scene, welcoming a stranger is welcoming him.
