Explained connections
- Gracious and merciful
God proclaims himself merciful, gracious, slow to anger and abounding in love. Jonah quotes this creed as his complaint: he fled because he knew God would forgive Nineveh. The formula echoes through the Old Testament.
- Israel's creed sung
Psalm 103 turns God's self-description from Sinai into praise. The same words appear in Numbers 14, Nehemiah 9, Joel 2 and other places — one of Scripture's most repeated statements about God.
- Full of grace and truth
'Abundant in goodness and truth' (Hebrew: hesed and emet) describes God at Sinai. John says the Word made flesh is 'full of grace and truth' — the Sinai glory, now seen in a person.
- Forty days of fasting
Moses fasts forty days and nights on Sinai while receiving the covenant. Jesus fasts forty days and nights before his ministry, then goes up a mountain to teach — Matthew's portrait of a new Moses.
- A shining face on the mountain
Moses' face shone after speaking with God. On the mount of transfiguration Jesus' face shines like the sun — not reflecting glory as Moses did, but radiating it.
- The veil over Moses' face
Moses veiled his shining face before the people. Paul uses the veil for a fading covenant and a dulled understanding, removed when anyone turns to the Lord.
