Explained connections
- Firstborn and ruler of kings
God promises to make David's line his firstborn, highest of the kings of the earth. Revelation greets readers from Jesus 'the firstborn of the dead and ruler of the kings of the earth', applying the Davidic titles to the risen Christ.
- Behold, he comes with clouds
Revelation's opening announcement fuses Daniel 7:13 with Zechariah 12:10. The Son of Man returning on the clouds is the pierced one whom every eye will see.
- Every eye will see him
Revelation extends Zechariah's mourning from Jerusalem to all the tribes of the earth at Christ's return. The pierced one of Zechariah and the Son of Man of Daniel are one figure.
- The first and the last
In Isaiah God declares 'I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no God'. In Revelation the risen Jesus says 'I am the first and the last' — taking a title Isaiah reserves for God alone.
- Hair white as wool
Daniel's Ancient of Days has clothing white as snow and hair like pure wool. John sees the risen Christ with hair white as wool — features of God's own appearance.
- The lampstands
The tabernacle's golden lampstand gave light in God's dwelling. In Revelation the risen Christ walks among seven golden lampstands, which are the seven churches — the church now carries the light.
