Explained connections
- They shall not enter my rest
God swore the unbelieving generation would not enter his rest. Hebrews argues that since the oath still stands centuries later, a Sabbath rest remains for God's people.
- God rested on the seventh day
Hebrews connects the rest of Psalm 95 with God's own rest after creation. The rest offered is God's rest, entered by faith.
- Joshua's rest was not the final rest
Joshua gives Israel rest in the land. Hebrews notes that if Joshua (Greek 'Iesous') had given the final rest, God would not later speak of another day — a greater Joshua offers it.
- A Sabbath rest remains
Israel kept the seventh day holy as rest. Hebrews says a Sabbath rest remains for God's people, entered by faith and ceasing from one's own works.
