Explained connections
- A man after God's own heart
Samuel tells Saul that God has sought a man after his own heart. Paul quotes the description of David in his synagogue sermon, leading to David's descendant Jesus.
- "Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee"
In Psalm 2 the LORD declares the king his son on the day of his enthronement. Paul, preaching in Pisidian Antioch, applies the verse to the resurrection — the day God publicly declared Jesus his Son and King.
- Paul on the incorruptible Holy One
Paul uses the same psalm Peter used, making the same argument independently: David decayed after death, but the one God raised did not. Two apostles in two cities resting on one verse shows how central it was to early resurrection preaching.
- A light to the Gentiles
In the second Servant Song God says restoring Israel is too small a task; the servant will be a light to the nations to the ends of the earth. Paul and Barnabas cite it as their commission when they turn to the Gentiles in Pisidian Antioch.
- The sure mercies of David
Isaiah invites all to an everlasting covenant, the faithful mercies promised to David. Paul uses it with Psalm 16 to argue that the resurrection is God keeping his Davidic promises, never to return to decay.
- A work you would not believe
Habakkuk warns of an astonishing work — the Babylonian invasion — that people would not believe. Paul warns his synagogue audience not to scoff at God's new astonishing work in Christ.
