Explained connections
- Elijah who was to come
The last prophecy of the Old Testament promises Elijah's return before the great day of the LORD. Jesus says that, if they are willing to receive it, John the Baptist is that Elijah — four centuries of silence ended.
- Turning the hearts of the fathers
Malachi's Elijah will turn the hearts of fathers to their children. Gabriel uses these words to describe John's mission before he is born: to go in the spirit and power of Elijah and make ready a people for the Lord.
- Elijah has already come
Coming down from the transfiguration, where Elijah appeared, the disciples ask about Malachi's prophecy. Jesus says Elijah has already come and was not recognised, and they understand he means John the Baptist.
- Burning the chaff
Malachi pictures the coming day burning like an oven, leaving the arrogant as stubble. John the Baptist warns of one who will burn the chaff with unquenchable fire — the Old Testament's last prophet and the New Testament's first share the warning.
