Explained connections
- More tolerable for Sodom
God hears the outcry against Sodom's sin. Jesus shocks Capernaum by saying it will be more bearable for Sodom on judgement day — because Capernaum saw his miracles and still didn't repent.
- Tyre and Sidon
Ezekiel condemns the proud king of Tyre. Jesus says Tyre and Sidon would have repented long ago had they seen his works, unlike the Galilean towns that did.
- The blind see, the deaf hear
Isaiah describes God's coming salvation: eyes of the blind opened, ears of the deaf unstopped, the lame leaping. When John the Baptist asks whether Jesus is the one, Jesus answers with a list of his miracles drawn from this passage and Isaiah 61.
- My messenger before your face
Malachi says God will send his messenger to prepare the way before him, and the Lord will suddenly come to his temple. Jesus identifies John the Baptist as that messenger — which casts Jesus himself as the Lord who follows.
- Elijah who was to come
The last prophecy of the Old Testament promises Elijah's return before the great day of the LORD. Jesus says that, if they are willing to receive it, John the Baptist is that Elijah — four centuries of silence ended.
