Explained connections
- Mercy, not sacrifice
Hosea says God wants steadfast love more than sacrifices. When Pharisees object to Jesus eating with tax collectors, he tells them to go and learn what this means: he came to call sinners.
- Sheep without a shepherd
Moses asks God for a leader so Israel won't be like sheep without a shepherd; God appoints Joshua. Jesus — whose name is the Greek form of Joshua — sees the crowds as sheep without a shepherd and has compassion.
