Explained connections
- He catches the wise in their craftiness
Eliphaz, one of Job's friends, says God traps the crafty in their own schemes. Paul quotes it — the only clear New Testament quotation of Job — to puncture worldly wisdom.
- The thoughts of the wise are futile
The psalm says the LORD knows human thoughts are vapour. Paul pairs it with Job to warn the Corinthians against boasting in human leaders.
- You are God's temple
The cloud filling Solomon's temple marked God's residence. Paul tells the Corinthians that they, together, are now God's temple, and his Spirit lives in them.
