Explained connections
- The singular Seed of Abraham
God promises that through Abraham's seed all nations will be blessed. Paul presses the grammar: the promise speaks of 'seed', not 'seeds', and he reads it as pointing to one descendant, Christ, through whom the blessing reaches the Gentiles.
- Children of Abraham by faith
Paul cites Abraham's faith to the Galatians, who were being told they needed circumcision. Those who believe, he argues, are Abraham's true children and share his blessing.
- No one justified by the law
Paul sets Habakkuk 2:4 against Leviticus 18:5: if the righteous live by faith, then life does not come by doing the law. Galatians uses the verse to defend justification by faith.
- The law is not of faith
Paul quotes Leviticus 18:5 to show the law's principle is doing, not believing. Since no one keeps it perfectly, the law cannot be the path to life.
- Cursed is everyone who does not continue
At Mount Ebal Israel pronounced a curse on anyone not upholding the law's words. Paul argues that relying on the law places one under that curse, because the law requires continuing in everything it says.
- Cursed is everyone hanged on a tree
Deuteronomy declared an executed criminal hung on a tree to be under God's curse. Paul says Christ became a curse for us by hanging on the cross, redeeming us from the law's curse — turning a stumbling block into the heart of the gospel.
- The gospel preached beforehand to Abraham
God promises Abraham that all nations will be blessed in him. Paul calls this the gospel announced in advance: Scripture foresaw God justifying Gentiles by faith.
