Explained connections
- Abraham offers Isaac
Abraham binds Isaac on the altar. James uses this act to show Abraham's faith was real because it acted — faith and works together.
- Rahab justified by works
Rahab lets the spies down by a rope and sends them another way. James pairs her with Abraham as examples of faith shown in action.
- The royal law
James calls Leviticus 19:18 the 'royal law' and uses it to condemn favouritism towards the rich in church gatherings. Showing partiality breaks the law of love — and James notes the same chapter of Leviticus also forbids partiality (19:15).
- Faith shown by works
James quotes the same verse as Paul but stresses that Abraham's faith was completed when he acted on it by offering Isaac. The two apostles answer different errors: Paul opposes earning righteousness, James opposes faith that never acts.
- Even the demons believe God is one
James grants that believing in one God, the Shema's truth, is good — but demons believe it too and tremble. Belief that never acts is not saving faith.
