Explained connections
- The Ten Commandments, twice
The Decalogue is given at Sinai in Exodus and repeated by Moses forty years later in Deuteronomy to the next generation. The texts are almost identical, with notable differences.
- Two reasons for the Sabbath
Exodus grounds the Sabbath in creation: God rested on the seventh day. Deuteronomy grounds it in redemption: remember you were slaves in Egypt. Both texts together give two reasons to rest.
- You shall not murder
Jesus quotes the sixth commandment, then deepens it: anger and contempt for a brother already break its spirit. He is not abolishing the law but showing its full intent.
- You shall not commit adultery
Jesus extends the seventh commandment to the heart: looking at a woman with lust is adultery already. The Sermon on the Mount moves the commandments from actions to desires.
- Honour your father and mother
Paul quotes the fifth commandment to children and notes it is the first commandment with a promise attached: that it may go well with you.
- You shall not covet
Paul says he would not have known desire as sin without the command not to covet. The tenth commandment, which concerns the heart rather than actions, exposes sin's inner reach.
- One God, one Lord
The first commandment forbids other gods. Paul reaffirms there is one God, the Father, and one Lord, Jesus Christ — reworking the Shema to include Jesus within Israel's one God.
- A Sabbath rest remains
Israel kept the seventh day holy as rest. Hebrews says a Sabbath rest remains for God's people, entered by faith and ceasing from one's own works.
