Explained connections
- A prophet like Moses
Moses promises that God will raise up a prophet like him from among the people, whom Israel must heed. Peter quotes the promise directly and applies it to Jesus, warning that rejecting him is rejecting the prophet Moses foretold.
- Stephen and the prophet like Moses
In his defence before the council, Stephen retells Israel's history and quotes Moses' promise of a coming prophet. His point: Israel rejected Moses at first, and is now repeating the pattern by rejecting the prophet Moses himself pointed to.
- "This is of a truth that prophet"
After Jesus feeds the five thousand — echoing God feeding Israel in the wilderness under Moses — the crowd concludes he is 'the Prophet who should come into the world'. Their phrase shows Deuteronomy 18 was a live messianic expectation in Jesus' day.
