Explained connections
- Not abandoned to the grave
David expresses confidence that God will not leave him in Sheol or let his holy one see corruption. At Pentecost Peter argues David died and his tomb is still there, so the psalm must speak prophetically of the Messiah's resurrection.
- Paul on the incorruptible Holy One
Paul uses the same psalm Peter used, making the same argument independently: David decayed after death, but the one God raised did not. Two apostles in two cities resting on one verse shows how central it was to early resurrection preaching.
- The path of life
The psalm closes with joy in God's presence and the 'path of life'. Peter continues his quotation through this verse, presenting the resurrection and ascension as Jesus entering exactly that life and joy.
