Explained connections
- Not abandoned to the grave
David expresses confidence that God will not leave him in Sheol or let his holy one see corruption. At Pentecost Peter argues David died and his tomb is still there, so the psalm must speak prophetically of the Messiah's resurrection.
- The path of life
The psalm closes with joy in God's presence and the 'path of life'. Peter continues his quotation through this verse, presenting the resurrection and ascension as Jesus entering exactly that life and joy.
- Seated at the right hand
Peter notes that David himself did not ascend to heaven, so Psalm 110 speaks of someone else. He concludes his Pentecost sermon by saying God has made the crucified Jesus both Lord and Christ, enthroned at his right hand.
- God's oath to David
Psalm 132 recalls God's sworn promise to set one of David's descendants on his throne. Peter cites the oath at Pentecost: David was a prophet who knew God had sworn this, so he foresaw the Messiah's resurrection.
- The Spirit poured out on all flesh
Joel promises that God will pour out his Spirit on all people: sons and daughters, old and young, servants included. At Pentecost Peter declares 'this is that', adding 'in the last days' to show the new age has begun.
- Babel reversed
At Babel God confuses humanity's language and scatters the people. At Pentecost the Spirit enables the apostles to speak in many languages and the nations gathered in Jerusalem understand: division undone and a new people gathered.
- Would that all the LORD's people were prophets
When two elders prophesy in the camp, Moses wishes God would put his Spirit on all his people. At Pentecost Peter announces that wish fulfilled: the Spirit is poured on sons and daughters, servants and handmaids.
- The sun turned to darkness
Joel describes cosmic signs before the great day of the LORD. Peter includes them in his Pentecost quotation: the last days have begun.
- You meant evil, God meant good
Joseph tells his brothers their evil intent was used by God to save many lives. Peter's Pentecost sermon has the same shape: lawless men crucified Jesus, yet it happened by God's set purpose to bring salvation.
- Fifty days to Pentecost
Leviticus counts fifty days from firstfruits to the Feast of Weeks, a harvest festival (Greek: Pentecost). The Spirit is poured out on that day, and three thousand are gathered — the first harvest of the church.
- Fire on the mountain, fire on the disciples
God descends on Sinai in fire to give the law. In Jewish tradition Pentecost came to commemorate the giving of the law, and at Pentecost fire rests on each disciple as the Spirit writes God's law on hearts.
