Explained connections
- Ascending on high with captives
The psalm pictures God ascending his mountain in triumph, leading captives and receiving gifts. Paul adapts it — Christ ascended and gave gifts to people — to explain how the risen Lord equips the church; the shift from 'received' to 'gave' follows an early Aramaic reading tradition.
- Be angry and do not sin
The Greek version of Psalm 4:4 reads 'be angry, and do not sin'. Paul quotes it and adds: do not let the sun go down on your anger.
- Speak the truth to your neighbour
Zechariah's call for truthful speech is part of God's plan for restored Jerusalem. Paul applies it to the church, because we are members of one another.
