Explained connections
- A house of prayer for all nations
Isaiah promises foreigners a welcome in God's house, a house of prayer for all peoples. Clearing traders from the temple's Gentile court, Jesus quotes it — only Mark keeps 'for all nations'.
- A den of robbers
In his temple sermon Jeremiah accused Judah of treating the temple as a hideout where wrongdoers felt safe, and warned of its destruction. Jesus' combined quotation implies a similar warning for Herod's temple.
