Explained connections
- The rejected stone becomes the cornerstone
Psalm 118 celebrates a stone the builders discarded becoming the head of the corner. Jesus quotes it after his parable of the wicked tenants, casting Israel's leaders as the builders who reject him and God as the one who vindicates him.
- Peter before the council
Facing the same leaders who condemned Jesus, Peter tells them directly: you are the builders, and Jesus is the rejected stone God has made the cornerstone. He then declares there is salvation in no other name.
- Precious to believers, a stumbling stone to others
Peter weaves Psalm 118:22 together with Isaiah 28:16 and 8:14 into a 'stone' collage. The same stone is precious to those who believe and a cause of stumbling to those who reject it.
- "Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord"
Psalm 118 was sung by pilgrims at the festivals and part of the Passover Hallel. The Palm Sunday crowds shout its words, with 'Hosanna' ('save, please') from the verse before, hailing Jesus as the coming Son of David.
- Not until you say 'Blessed is he…'
Lamenting over Jerusalem, Jesus says the city will not see him until it says the words of Psalm 118:26. The pilgrim greeting becomes a condition for recognising the Messiah.
- The Lord is my helper
Psalm 118 says that with the LORD on my side I will not fear what man can do. Hebrews places it right after God's promise never to leave, as the believer's confident response.
