Explained connections
- A great light in Galilee
Isaiah promises light to the northern territories of Zebulun and Naphtali, the first lands lost to Assyria. Matthew notes Jesus began his ministry in exactly that region, by the Sea of Galilee — the darkest place first to see the dawn.
- Unto us a child is born
Isaiah announces a royal child with titles like Mighty God and Prince of Peace. The angel's announcement to the shepherds — unto you is born a Saviour, Christ the Lord — echoes the 'unto us' birth announcement and its peace.
- The throne of David without end
Isaiah's royal child will rule on David's throne with an endless, ever-increasing kingdom. Gabriel promises Mary that God will give her son the throne of his father David — a direct link between the prophecy and the annunciation.
