Explained connections
- Rejoice, barren one
Isaiah calls barren, desolate Zion to sing because her children will outnumber those of the married woman. Paul links it to Sarah's barrenness and to the 'Jerusalem above', whose children are born by promise.
- All taught by God
Isaiah promises restored Zion's children will be taught by the LORD. Jesus says everyone who has truly listened to the Father comes to him.
- As I swore in Noah's day
God covenants never again to flood the earth. Isaiah cites that oath to assure exiled Israel that God's anger will not last: his covenant of peace will not be removed.
