Explained connections
- Nathan's oracle in two histories
God's covenant with David appears in both Samuel and Chronicles. Chronicles, written after the exile, omits the line about punishing the son's wrongdoing, focusing on hope for David's line.
- A throne for ever
Through Nathan, God promises David that his son's throne and kingdom will be established for ever. Gabriel's announcement to Mary uses the same terms: her son will receive David's throne and his kingdom will have no end — the Davidic covenant arriving at its fulfilment.
- "I will be his father, and he shall be my son"
God's promise about David's royal heir describes a father–son relationship with God. Hebrews quotes it alongside Psalm 2 to show that the Son holds a status no angel ever had, reading the promise as finding its full sense in Jesus.
- The Davidic covenant sung
God promises David a lasting dynasty. Psalm 89 celebrates this covenant at length — then laments when the dynasty seems to fail, keeping the hope alive through exile.
- The builder of God's house
God promises David's son will build a house for his name. Jesus says 'destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it', speaking of his body — the Son of David builds the true temple through resurrection.
