Explained connections
- In the beginning
John deliberately opens his Gospel with the Bible's first words. Where Genesis says God created, John says the Word was already with God and was God — placing Jesus before and behind creation itself.
- Light shining in darkness
John's prologue retells Genesis: life and light come through the Word, and the light shines in the darkness, which has not overcome it. Creation's first light returns as Christ.
- God tabernacles among us
God asks Israel to build a sanctuary so he can dwell among them. John says the Word became flesh and 'dwelt' — literally pitched his tent — among us, and we saw his glory, as Israel saw it fill the tabernacle.
- Full of grace and truth
'Abundant in goodness and truth' (Hebrew: hesed and emet) describes God at Sinai. John says the Word made flesh is 'full of grace and truth' — the Sinai glory, now seen in a person.
- There when he set the heavens
Wisdom says she was there when God established the heavens. John says all things were made through the Word and nothing was made without him — language long linked to Wisdom traditions.
- God will provide the lamb
When Isaac asks where the lamb is, Abraham answers that God will provide it; a ram is supplied in Isaac's place. John the Baptist points to Jesus as the Lamb of God, the provision Abraham's words anticipated.
- Jacob's ladder
Jacob dreams of a stairway between heaven and earth with angels ascending and descending. Jesus tells Nathanael he will see angels ascending and descending on the Son of Man: Jesus himself is the meeting point of heaven and earth.
- No one has seen God
God tells Moses no one can see his face and live. John's prologue agrees no one has ever seen God — but the only Son, who is at the Father's side, has made him known.
