Explained connections
- Pierced hands and feet
The KJV reads 'they pierced my hands and my feet', following the Greek Septuagint; the standard Hebrew text is difficult and is sometimes read 'like a lion'. Christians have long linked the verse to crucifixion, and Thomas's demand to see the nail prints in Jesus' hands is one of the clearest echoes.
- The breath of new life
God breathes into Adam the breath of life. The risen Jesus breathes on his disciples and says 'Receive the Holy Spirit' — John uses the same rare verb as the Greek of Genesis 2:7, signalling new creation.
- Breath into dry bones
Ezekiel prophesies to the wind (or breath, or spirit — one Hebrew word) to enter the slain so they live. Jesus breathing the Spirit into his disciples enacts the same picture.
- Two angels at either end
God met Israel between two golden cherubim at either end of the mercy seat. Mary sees two angels in white sitting at the head and foot of where Jesus' body had lain — many readers see a deliberate picture of the new mercy seat.
